Pulse electromagnetic field therapy also known as PEMF emits electromagnetic waves at different frequencies which stimulate and encourage the body’s healing processes.
Pemf has a rich and varied history that spans more than 100 years, reflecting from early magnetic practices to more sophisticated modern medical devices.
There were many people that contributed to the study and development of PEMF therapy, Dr Andrew Bassett, Dr Arthur Pilla, and Nikola Tesla who is considered as one of the pioneers of modern PEMF usage.
Tesla was an advocate of pulse magnetism and was fascinated by the ability to pass electricity through the body. In 1882 he discovered the rotating magnetic field.
Many years later, Pemf was used by NASA in space exploration, to help reduce the loss of bone density and muscle strength which occurs when leaving the earth’s magnetic fields. This form of therapy was embraced in The Soviet Union by medical doctors who wanted to use the technology on their patients. It became widely used in hospitals throughout the Soviet union and in Eastern Europe. Many studies from Eastern Europe and decades of experience in Western Europe led to a detailed understanding of how various frequencies and wave-forms work best with each other for specific conditions.
In 2009 NASA was awarded the patent for PEMF use to enhance tissue repair in animals. The first use within veterinary research via studies in the USA was on the repair of limb fractures in racehorses – which showed outstanding results.
They noticed that not only was the Pemf encouraging healing in the fractured limb at an accelerated rate but it was also healing the surrounding tissue faster and better as well with less residual scar tissue. With these results studies continuing today.
Just to explain a little more:
The earth’s electromagnetic fields affect the nervous and circulatory systems of every living cell in humans, animal and plants. Every living animal and plant are connected to this field and cannot survive without it.
Tiny electrical currents exist in the human body and in animals and plants, due to the chemical reactions that occur as part of our normal bodily functions.
For example:
Nerves relay signals by transmitting electrical pulses to the brain to alert us to pain.
All biochemical reactions from digestion to brain activities occur with the arrangement of charged particles, from a higher charge to a lesser charge as energy is utilized.
Even the heart is electrically active – which can be traced with the help of an ECG (Electrocardiogram) – This measures the passage of the electrical discharge through the heart Purkinje fibers.
Studies have shown that PEMF devices induce a frequency that is consistent with the earth’s magnetic frequencies known as the healing frequency.
How PEMF works:
Pemf works at a cellular level, enhancing cellular function and physical level by improving circulation, and supporting oxygen and nutrient delivery to tissues. This helps cells function more effectively, plus actually recharges the cell like electricity does to a battery.
By promoting cellular repair and reducing inflammation, PEMF can help manage pain and accelerate healing in many conditions.
The treatment itself usually takes between 20-30 minutes and is completely painless. We encourage owner's to sit with their pet while they receive this treatment. PEMF treatments are most beneficial when performed once - twice weekly.
The potential benefits of PEMF:
Pain Management: Pemf is commonly used to aid pain relief from arthritis, injuries, and post surgical recovery. Pain occurs when the nerves are sensitive, lactic acid builds up in the muscles and toxin build up occurs.
Bone Healing: Pemf promotes the healing of fractures, non-union fractures, and other bone- related injuries. It does this by stimulated osteoblasts – The cells that add to bone formation.
Muscle Atrophy: Pemf can assist in preventing muscle atrophy and promoting muscle regeneration, particularly in patients with severe injuries. It does this by stimulating muscle contraction and blood flow without the patient requiring to actually exercise.
Accelerates recovery: Pemf can help speed up recovery times for surgeries and injuries, by improving blood flow and cellular health.
Reduced inflammation: Pemf can help lower inflammation, which is beneficial for many chronic conditions. It does this by mobilising toxins (Though if done for too long this can result in liver and kidney overload and symptoms of a severe flu)
Improved mobility: Many of our clients pets experience an improved range of motion and mobility after treatments, especially older pets or those with joint issues. This is secondary to improve blood flow and nutritional supply.
Stress Relief: It has also been noted that pets respond positively to Pemf, showing reduced anxiety and stress, which can also contribute to overall health and well being. Stress results in muscle spasms and toxin build up.
In Tasmania, Sandy Bay Holistic is the only clinic to offer PEMF therapy.
At Sandy Bay Holistic veterinary clinic we use PEMF therapy in many of our treatments for a variety animals including: cats, dogs, chickens, lambs, goats and horses.
Are there any risks or side effects associated with Pemf?
There are no known side effects and is considered a safe therapy, however there are some considerations that some people need to be aware of:
People who have a pacemaker, some hearing aids, and some specific health conditions do need to be aware of some Pemf devices. It is always a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new treatment.
If bringing a pet for treatment, somebody else may have to hold the pet as the magnetic influence can extend up to 6M circumference, so it can interfere with the pacemaker from a distance.
